January 24th

Pepper and Nugget share a broccoli leaf.

Today is Change a Pet's Life Day.
Well, all I can say is that our 5 girls
surely have a pampered life.
When the CEO got them almost 5
years ago, we never dreamed
they would be so much fun!
This is baby Nugget.
She's so stinkin' cute.
Raising them was a learning curve for sure,
but thanks to the LSU agricultural site,
we are getting really savvy about chickens.
They have individual personalities
and weird quirks that make us laugh
every day.
Lucy

Hazel

Ethel

They usually like their pictures taken
because they are naturally inquisitive,
and usually don't mind being picked
up and carried around.
Except this day...
Nugget was flailing her wings
and pedaling her feet to get
down, so the CEO let her go.
Fickle chickens.

Since this winter has been mild so far,
the veggies are doing great.

Beets

Broccoli

I picked one for tonight's dinner.
They taste amazing when they are
picked fresh.

Yellow broccoli

Celery
I've harvested a bit of these to
use in my chicken soup last week.
(No pet hens were harmed in the making of the soup)
😊

Cauliflower seedlings

They are starting to sprout!

Musings from an old lady's mind.....

I know that this is a good product,
but why did they think one tooth
in that logo would promote
their mouthwash?
It looks like only one tooth is left!
So, I guess it's living up to it's
name in caring for the gums?

Every time I open the 'fridge,
it feels like the salsa is judging me!
Yeah, I get it. I'm fat,
but no need to shame me.
(I moved it to the back,
behind the milk)

Well, Ralph Kramden was ahead of his time.
"To the moon, Alice!"

This is just a PSA from the
LSU Ag site...
This is NOT the same for store bought eggs.
They must always be refrigerated.

And this
I try to live by this motto.

A prayer for my sister

If you feel sad,
I'll be your smile.
If you cry,
I'll comfort you.
If your heart is broken,
you can use mine.
I'll always be there for you,
and I pray for you every day.
May God bless you
and protect you

Amen

This battle was actually fought after a peace
treaty was signed on 12/24/1814 in Ghent.
It formally ended the War of 1812,
but...
British Secretary of War Henry Bathurst
issued secret orders on 10/24/1814,
(knowing that peace negotiations
were already underway) to General Pakenham
commanding him to continue on
with the war even if he found out
that a peace accord was reached.
Bathurst thought that the US
might not ratify a treaty and he
didn't want England to miss out
on a victory of taking a major
port city.
Well, we all know how that turned out.

The rag-tag militia that General
Jackson commanded, routed the
much better equipped and trained
British Marines, Army and Navy.
The battle took about 30 minutes, and
cost the British nearly 2,000 casualties,
while the Americans suffered only 60.
This is a story of right over might.
We took on the greatest naval power
in the world at that time and prevailed.

Not much going on at the backyard farm.
This is Nugget in their scratch feed tray.

Lucy.
she's giving me the side eye.

Ethel hanging with Pepper.
Hazel was off doing her yard patrol.

Today's eggs.
1 from Nugget and 1 from Lucy.
Thanks girls!

**********************

It was a bit too cold to go out
checking the veggie beds.
The chicken girls were warm
and comfortable, so I stayed inside.
This is an aloe that has been
growing inside for about a year.
Looking good.

This is a sad looking
cuban oregano.
I planted it last year and it seems
to be doing fine. It even has a baby.

And this is Wednesday's
pepper harvest

***************************

Prayer for my sister...
Heavenly Father, protect her life and her soul.
Look upon her with tenderness and grace.
I beg this from you, Lord.
She is a much better person than I
and deserving of your gifts.
Please heal her.
In you all things are possible.
In Jesus Christ I pray.
Amen

January 1st 2021

I thought these two pictures summed up
our collective apprehension about
ringing in another potentially
volatile year.
Here's hoping for the best.
Cheers!

**********************************

This is our beets in the foreground and
broccoli in the back.

Beets

Up close shots of the broccoli
heads.

Bell Peppers

Artichoke

Tomatoes

Parsley

Bay Laurel surrounded
by lavender.

Lucy peeping at me
through the fencing.
It is designed to keep
nosy fowl from eating
the leaves.
(note the bites taken out of the leaves)
So, not really effective.

Nugget doing some eyeballing herself.
She's snacking on the leaves too.
They love broccoli!

Nugget in the foreground
and Pepper in back.

Today's harvest.
3 green tomatoes, 5 bell peppers
and
2 eggs.
I pick the tomatoes early
because those greedy girls
love tomatoes and they'll peck
at them till they fall off the bush.

 Here's a little PSA,
courtesy of LSU
online Ag site.
Proper temperature is approximately 40 degrees.

The CEO hung a prism in the window
to ward off kamikaze birds from
dive bombing into the bay window.
So far its' working.
In the early morning sunlight,
the window faces east,
so,
I get to see a beautiful rainbow of light!
There's dappled rainbows all over!
and...
if i look at it just right,
I get to see different colors,
this is a greenish yellow.
Amazing!

Small things amuse me.
😄

**************************

There seems to be weird "beauty"
trends these days.
I put this in the category of,
I DON'T GET IT.

These nails should be classified as weapons!
Clearly women who indulge in this type
of manicure either:
1) Have no job that requires use of their hands.
2) Have no small children to fear stabbing them.
3) Not effective for hand washing in the age of Covid.
and
4) How, in holy hell, do they wipe their butts????
Answer - very carefully!

And this!
There's so much make up on girls these days!
It looks like it is applied with a putty knife!
Is this stuff easy to get off?
Hopefully they don't sleep in it
because it'd destroy their pillow cases,
and
how do they manage an intimate relationship?
Kissing someone would transfer all that onto
their partners face or removing it might frighten
them when they see the"real" girl.

And this.....
defies logic!
Why would you put glitter so close to your eyes??
No, I do not think this looks remotely good.
Actually looks a tad creepy to me.
There are tons of these "tutorials"
on Instagram, so apparently
people do watch them.
I attribute it to lack of anything better to do.
Ha!

Observations:

What's with the use of obscure French songs
by Edith Piaf in car insurance commercials?
I don't speak that language and I'd hazard a
guess that a lot of people viewing the commercial
don't either, so what's the deal??
I Googled the translation.
No connection whatsoever to insurance.
Go figure.

Why do companies say if I buy an item they'll donate
one or a portion of something to some charity or cause?
Just donate the money or item already.
They make way more than I do so
donate the cockadoodie stuff!
I can find my inner altruistic nature elsewhere.
It makes my Spidey-sense tingle.
They are getting their charitable donation
credits for tax purposes anyway,
just sayin'.

BOGO items. What if I don't want 2?
I rarely shop, but this seems weird to me.
In fairness, there have been a few times
that I've taken advantage to a BOGO,
like in the grocery, but on the whole...
Nope

************************

Ode to a Dustbuster.
Do you remember these?
I have a next generation one of them,
but the suction just isn't the same.
I have to go over an area several times to
suck up a pesky item.
But...
this old school baby could suck a Cheerio
clear through the cardbox box!
I loved it!
It was especially helpful with 2 young
boys making messes.

*************************

Have you been let down by misnamed
fruit?
I certainly have.
Full disclosure...
these fruits do not represent what they are named for.

Strawberry - nope, no straw.
Passionfruit - seriously?
Grapefruit - you guessed it, no grapes!
Honeydew - wrong on both accounts,
no honey - no dew!
Dragonfruit - don't even go there.
😂

In this new year,
I'd like to thank whomever reads my blog.
You make my life happy because I can share
my musings and that's an important piece
of my life right now.
So,
thank you for just being there.
